MENDOZA is the capital of the province of Mendoza about 700 miles west northwest of Buenos Aires. Small for a provincial capital with 125,000 inhabitants it is a commercial city but with a lot for the tourist. Located in the foothills of the Andes mountains means nearby rafting, camping, and sightseeing. It is a wine center for Argentina. The downtown area is largely pedestrianized. The outdoor cafés and tree-lined avenues attest to the city's European heritage. Mendoza is a perfect example of a successful combination of Spanish, Italian and indigenous cultures. It offers excellent rail, bus and air transportation services to all parts of the country, including neighboring Chile.
