He gave the city the name Ciudad de los Reyes (City of the Kings). It was one of the most important cities during the Spanish colonial period. The cathedral on the central square of the city, the Plaza de Armas, still remains from this period. In 1988 the historic centre of Lima was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lima's beaches are very popular during the summer months. You will find many restaurants, clubs, bars and hotels along the coast.
